About MH Ross Travel Insurance Services

MH Ross was founded in 1961, and their location in Kansas City has them domiciled in Missouri but incorporated in Kansas. Since 2009 MH Ross has been operating as part of the Trip Mate brand of companies; Trip Mate was in turn acquired by Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. in 2014. All MH Ross plans are administered by Trip Mate. The name Trip Assure has also been associated with MH Ross, and although it is not mentioned on their website, various locations have the two names connected.

MH Ross is licensed in all states and writes travel policies through agents across the country. Unlike some other travel insurance companies, MH Ross is focused on package trip protection plans and does not offer any other types of insurance.

MH Ross Insurance Products

Keeping things simple, MH Ross has three levels of package travel policy. Each comes with a long list of included coverage as well as the option to add additional coverage.

The Asset plan is the most basic, including 100% of the trip cost for cancellation and 125% for an interruption. This is higher than most basic plans, which generally offer 100% for an interruption. The plan has $50,000 in medical expenses coverage and includes $500,000 in evacuation coverage (this amount is the same with all MH Ross plans), again higher than most of the entry-level travel insurance plans out there.

The Bridge plan increased interruption coverage to 150% and has an increased medical expense coverage amount of $100,000. Most other benefits of this plan have higher limits than the Asset plan.

The highest level is the Complete plan, which is the only option that includes canceling for any reason coverage, at 75% off the cost. This plan includes an impressive 200% coverage for trip interruption and has the highest medical expenses coverage at $250,000.

All of the plans can be upgraded with flight accident coverage, a sports upgrade coverage package, rental car coverage, and extended personal property coverage as well. Each add-on comes with an additional fee.

MH Ross Travel Insurance Rates

MH Ross has an easy to use and quick quoting system, which we used to run a sample 7-day trip for a 30-year-old traveler with a trip cost of $5,000.

The least expensive option, the Asset plan, came back at $180. This number is higher than we have seen at some companies for their most comprehensive plans – however, MH Ross’ base plan includes much higher coverage and more benefits than the usual entry-level plan, making it worth some extra cost.

The Complete plan came in at a cost of $398, which is among the most expensive plans we have seen anywhere for a travel package. Although it does include plenty of benefits, it still seems to be a very expensive plan.

MH Ross’ rental car coverage add-on option is $7 a day, which is fairly reasonable, and likely more affordable than coverage offered directly from the rental car company. Extended personal property adds only $15 to the price, while the accidental flight death and dismemberment coverage ranges from $10 to $50 depending on the coverage level selected. Adding all of these at the highest level to the Complete plan would result in a total cost of $470, which is expensive for a 7-day trip.

MH Ross Travel Insurance Claims

MH Ross’ report a claim link takes the visitor to a different website, travelclaimsonline.com, where claims can be submitted electronically. The website offers limited claims information, listing only required documents for various types of claims. We did find a 24-hour claims phone number on the contact page of the site, but there is not a section is directly dedicated to the claims process.

MH Ross Travel Insurance Reviews and Ratings

We were unable to find a Better Business Bureau (BBB) page for MH Ross’ head office in Kansas City, MI. Parent company Trip Mate has an A rating with the BBB and has 402 complaints on file in the past three years. If those complaints encompass all of the companies under the Trip Mate brand, this is not a high volume. Whether or not it does indeed encompass all of the companies is not made clear on the page.

We were unable to find much in terms of direct reviews of MH Ross. There is one negative review on Consumer Affairs. The lack of reviews may be due to a good reputation but may also reflect the various names associated with this company, including Trip Mate and Trip Assure.

MH Ross Travel Insurance Review: The Bottom Line

If cost is not a concern, MH Ross offers very comprehensive plans, and add-on options are relatively affordable. The base price, however, may give some travelers pause; good insurance coverage can be had from other companies for less. It always bears repeating, however, that comparing coverage apples to apples is a must when determining which policy gives you the best value for your insurance dollar.
