In 1892 a group of 14 lodges connected with the Greek Catholic Church came together to form a fraternal society dedicated to providing life insurance coverage to members who could not obtain it elsewhere. The Greek Catholic Union’s policies protected those with dangerous occupations that would bar them from being issued coverage by standard insurance companies.

The original rules of the organization limited membership to those who were a part of the Greek Catholic Church, but in 1979 the Union changed the requirements. While the website says they are open to all Christians, there are specifics in the bylaws regarding who can become a member. To qualify one of these requirements must be met:

• Member of a Byzantine Church under the jurisdiction of the Metropolitan Ruthenian Church of Pittsburgh
• Of Slav heritage and a member of the Catholic Church
• A Catholic or Christian of any denomination meeting the requirements (must follow the tenants of the Nicene Creed) interested in the Byzantine Church or Slav heritage
• A member of an acquired fraternal society

In addition to meeting one of the above requirements, the purchase of a product is required for membership, which is available at two levels – Insurance and Associate.
