What is Imperial Fire & Casualty?
The Imperial Fire & Casualty insurance company was founded in Opelousas, Louisiana. They have since expanded into several neighboring states, and now write insurance coverage in Florida, Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas in addition to Louisiana. They are licensed in several other states as well.
In 2014, the large holding company National General acquired Imperial Fire & Casualty, and they now operate as a wholly-owned subsidiary. This gives the company a strong financial backing that alleviates any concern regarding the reliability of a younger, smaller insurer.
The acquisition followed the purchase of the company by a private equity investor whose purchase of Imperial and another insurer proved ill-fated and resulted in regulators stepping in.
The company still has its home office in Opelousas, but now has offices in four other states, including an office in Dallas, Texas. Independent agents sell their policies across the five states they service.
It writes personal auto insurance as well as basic homeowners insurance products, although not all products are available in all five states.

What types of products are offered?
The company offers auto insurance in all five of the states they serve.
Homeowners coverage is currently only offered in Louisiana and Texas.
Is auto coverage offered?
Imperial offers a relatively basic auto insurance program that covers all of the standard required coverage and common options. They offer full coverage policies that include options for rental reimbursement, towing & labor coverage, and all of the other basics.
There is no sign of the more trendy or gimmicky options that we frequently see from large insurers these days. While some people prefer a large array of options, Imperial’s straightforward program is likely to appeal to those who like to keep things simple.
Imperial promises great pricing on their policies, which appears to be accomplished mainly by keeping their products on the simple side.
Can you get homeowners coverage?
Imperial writes standard homeowner’s policies as well as more basic dwelling fire policies.
The standard home insurance policy includes coverage for the home, personal property, and liability coverage. Again, this appears to be a straightforward policy without a lot of add-ons.
Dwelling fire policies are designed for non-owner-occupied homes, specifically, those that are rented out to others. They include rental reimbursement expenses to cover loss of rent and provide specifically for the liability risks of renting your home to others.

What other types of coverage does the business offer?
Flood Insurance
Imperial writes flood insurance coverage through the Write Your Own Flood insurance policy program. This program is authorized by FEMA and follows all of the regulations of the National Flood Coverage Program, but allows the insurer to write their own flood insurance policies within the boundaries set out by this program.
Flood insurance is available for both residential and small business properties.
Are the company’s insurance rates competitive?
There is no online option to get Imperial Fire & Casualty Insurance quotes and quotes their policies only through agents. Furthermore, they do not write coverage in the two states from which we normally draw our comparison rates. Because of this, we are unable to provide a direct rate quote or a comparison to other insurers.
The company does make some big promises about getting affordable Imperial Fire & Casualty insurance; low-cost insurance is not generally what small regional insurers are particularly known for. They do keep their policies very simple, which is likely to keep rates down, but we’d be surprised to see them really competing with major direct-buy insurers.

Can claims be iled online?
Claims can be filed over the phone as well as online. The link on the website, ‘File a Claim’ brings you to the National General claims site. If you are making a flood insurance claim, the site directs you to call the Imperial Fire & Casualty insurance phone number at 877-254-6819.
All other claims can be filed by phone, 1-800-325-1088, available 24/7, or by submitting their claim online.
If the claim has already been submitted and the customer is looking for an update, the site provides a phone number specifically for this, 1-888-233-4575.
The website doesn’t offer any details on the company’s claims process, nor is there any information on how to file or what to expect.
Does the insurer have positive reviews?
Although the company is not accredited, the Imperial Fire & Casualty rating is an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. There is only one complaint against the company in the past three years.
Our previous review of this company had the BBB rating as B+ citing that a large volume of complaints from insurance customers was the cause, however, the previous complaint number was just 9, all of which had been responded to and closed by the company. It is nice to see the rating back up to an A+.
There are a few scattered reviews elsewhere of this company, but not many. This is partially due to the size of the company but still points to a relatively stable and trustworthy reputation.
What is the company’s financial strength rating?
Rating Company | Grade | Financial Outlook |
---|---|---|
AM Best | A- | Stable |
Fitch | N/A | N/A |
S&P | N/A | N/A |

What’s the bottom line?
Imperial Fire & Casualty offers very basic, solid products, and is backed by a huge, financially stable company. They are likely to appeal to those who prefer to obtain their policy through an agent and who seek to find a good balance between the price for coverage and customer service.
Those who are in search of the best price overall will likely find a better deal elsewhere, but Imperial is worth a look if you are willing to pay a little more for local, personal attention.
