Massachusetts-based Plymouth Rock Assurance serves a handful of surrounding states with a range of insurance options. Their products are mainly personal insurance, but they also offer commercial auto.
What is Plymouth Rock?
Plymouth Rock Assurance was founded in 1982 and is part of the Plymouth Rock Group of Companies. They operate in five states: Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
The company focuses mainly on auto insurance coverage and home insurance, and the available policies vary depending on the state. In some states, they also write commercial auto insurance policies.
Recently, Plymouth Rock re-branded several of its group of companies to bring everything in under the same company name. The goal was to create a unified brand and grow name recognition in the insurance industry. In some cases, the underlying companies continue to operate with their original names, but each insurance provider now uses the Plymouth Rock brand.
Policies are sold through independent agents across the service area.

What are the Plymouth Rock insurance products available?
Plymouth Rock writes personal auto insurance and homeowners insurance policies in all five states in which it operates. Additional types of insurance products may also be available in some states.
Auto Insurance
Auto insurance policy options vary a little depending on the state, but Plymouth Rock policies include all of the basics. Each policy meets the state requirements for base coverage, but can be adjusted and enhanced to be customized based on the needs of each auto insurance customer.
The website does not provide much information on what the available Plymouth Rock auto insurance options are but instead suggests speaking to an agent in your state instead of trying to find a policy online.
There is an impressive variety of discounts on the site. These include a wide range of choices like good student, good driver, anti-theft, and a multi-policy discount. Also available are affinity discounts – although which groups are involved is not listed – advance purchase, motor club, and more.
Plymouth Rock also has a special car insurance program for educators called the Teacher’s Plan of New Jersey. It provides coverage for teachers at all levels in New Jersey. for this type of insurance eligibility decisions are driven by your employment classification.
In Massachusetts, they have a personal auto insurance program affiliated with AARP for members of that group.
Each Plymouth Rock auto insurance policy comes with a few perks that are unusual.
Get Home Safe is a program that pays for the cost of a ride home – whether that’s a taxi or another option – if the insured driver does not feel safe driving home. There is not much detail on what that might comprise or if it includes situations within the driver’s control such as alcohol consumption.
There is also a loyalty rewards program and the Road Rewards app. This is something similar to the usage-based discount programs offered by other companies but has no impact on your auto policy insurance premium. Instead, in return for using an app that tracks your driving habits, the program provides rewards including gift cards and other types of customer discount.
The best way to get the most affordable rate and maximize your auto insurance discounts with Plymouth Rock Auto Insurance is to talk to an agent directly when you get an auto insurance quote.
Home Insurance
Plymouth Rock writes a variety of home policies, including standard homeowners, condo, and renters insurance policies. There is not a lot of information is available on these policies, but they include all of the usual coverage for a home insurance package. Basics listed are dwelling coverage, liability, loss of use, and personal property coverage.
Being properly covered by your homeowners policy can help you cover a range of things like an unexpected medical expense if someone sustains an injury in your home, to additional living expenses while your home is repaired after an accident, and more.
The optional coverage types available include endorsements for higher value personal property and identity theft protection. Endorsements like this can offer replacement coverage or help you save on the repair cost in the event of property damage.
Rental coverage also includes additional service options as well, such as utility service and even key replacement, which can help save you from paying out of pocket for a costly repair or other expense.
Coverage can vary by state, and again the site directs visitors to speak with an agent to find out what options are available and customize a package policy.
Other Products
Plymouth Rock writes commercial auto – their only commercial product – in three states. Those are Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Jersey.
Personal Umbrella insurance is also available in all states except for Pennsylvania.
Are the rates competitive?
The insurer does have an online quoting system, and although they are a regional insurance provider that does not provide coverage in our usual sample area, we did run a quick quote.
We chose the same zip code as the company’s Boston headquarters for our sample quote and quoted coverage options for a 30-year-old male driver with a 2010 Honda Accord and a clean record.
Our sample returned a full coverage quote of $120 a month. The 12-month premium came to $1,388.
We found the quoting system a little clunky, with a lot of questions to be answered and a lot of details. That said, it was very customizable in terms of coverage and did return a quote fairly quickly.
Shopping for competitive rates? The best way to get an accurate premium estimate and the comprehensive coverage that you need is to contact either customer service or speak with a real person that sells policies in your area. Of course, they can also find out if you’re eligible for a discount on your insurance rate, as well.
What is the claims process like?
Claims can be reported online by logging in to the policyholder account or using a policy number to sign in to the system.
If you prefer not to use the online service, you can also call. There are different claim phone numbers for each of the various states, so policyholders should check the detailed information for their state of residence in order to find the correct number to call. All claims lines are toll-free and give you access to a customer service representative 24 hours a day. Just have your policy number handy.
The company’s Door to Door Valet service handles an auto insurance claim from the initial report, through the repair process, and beyond. This was designed to create a seamless claims process for the personal auto customer. This means they will arrange for pickup of the vehicle, bring it to one of the network repair shop, handle all of the repairs, and bring it back to you when the repair is complete.
Also available is the Crashbusters mobile claim service, which will meet the policyholder at any location and help with taking care of the claim, even with a shop that is not in the network. In some cases, the company will issue a repair check on the spot so that repairs can move forward.
The claims section of the website is very robust and answers just about any question a policyholder could have. The included services make this claims program a step above what most regional insurers, and even many huge insurers, offer.

Are the ratings and customer reviews positive?
Is Plymouth Rock a good insurance company? It has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), with only 10 customer service complaints on file in the past three years. That is low for a good-sized regional insurance company. There are a few reviews left on the page, most of which are claims issues complaints. The company does respond to most of the reviews.
There are 37 reviews on Consumer Affairs for this company with an overall three out of five-star rating. That is quite good for a site where we rarely see positive reviews. There are several glowing reviews as well as some complaints, most of which are about claims issues.
What’s the bottom line?
Plymouth Rock Assurance is a solid choice for those in their coverage area, with policies that have above-and-beyond benefits and a good reputation overall. We are unable to provide a true comparison on rates, but they are well worth a comparison to other options out there, even the big-name companies.
