Seven Corners

Financial Strength

Seven Corners is a travel and short-term medical insurance company offering coverage for travel both within the country, or for an international trip. Their wide range of plans covers United States residents abroad as well as visitors and immigrants in America seeking protection from unexpected medical bills.

What is Seven Corners?

Founded in 1993, Seven Corners is an international insurance company offering a wide variety of products to travelers, students, and immigrants alike. The company’s headquarters is in Carmel, Indiana. Unlike some other travel insurance companies, Seven Corners handles all the underwriting and administration of their policies directly.

Coverage is offered through agents to travelers both in and outside the United States, and to citizens of most nations. Seven Corners separates their products into four categories: Travel Medical, Visitor & Immigrant, Trip Protection, and Student Plans. There are also two group plan options available. Like many travel insurance companies, Seven Corners travel insurance typically includes travel assistance and other services as part of the package on most plans.

Seven Corners recently stopped offering their adventure sports coverage plan called DOGTAG. We were unable to locate a reason as to why they stopped offering this coverage, but the plans were no longer available or renewable as of February 2018.

What Seven Corners travel insurance products are there?

Seven Corners separates its travel insurance plan offerings into categories, but there is some overlap in the packages. Travel Medical, for example, does provide some trip protection coverage such as lost baggage, and Trip Protection plans do include some medical coverage.

Travel Medical

Seven Corners has three main travel medical plans, which focus on covering medical care expenses from accident or illness during travel. All of these plans include 24/7 travel assistance service as well as coverage both in and outside the United States.

Liaison International is the most economical travel plan and provides from 5 to 45 days of coverage. Medical coverage can be selected between $50,000 and $1,000,000, and the deductible ranges from $0 to $2,500. This plan includes emergency medical evacuation at $300,000 along with various other coverage for emergency situations.

Liaison Continent provides anywhere from 5 to 187 days of coverage. The same coverage limits and deductibles are available, but this plan has higher coverage limits for a number of benefits, including $1,000,000 for medical evacuation.

Liaison Majestic is a long-term travel insurance policy that is renewable for up to three years. This plan has the highest coverage and includes a medical maximum of up to $5,000,000. Almost all areas have higher coverage, although medical evacuation is still $1,000,000.

Wander Frequent Traveler is the final option in the medical insurance plan lineup and is designed for those who take frequent trips to various locations throughout the year, providing several days of coverage per trip. This annual plan offers a $1,000,000 medical maximum and has a $250 deductible.

Trip Protection

These travel insurance plans are packages and focus more on the costs incurred by a canceled or interrupted trip than on medical care, although all the plans do have some emergency medical treatment coverage. If you’re worried about a nonrefundable trip expense in case of cancellation or interruption, these plans offer the travel insurance coverage you need.

Roundtrip Economy is the base level plan, covering trip cancellations and interruptions both at 100%. It includes a basic amount of medical emergency coverage, at $10,000, and $100,000 for evacuation. This plan can be upgraded with flight accident and rental car coverage, but the cancel for any reason option is not offered.

Roundtrip Choice is the mid-level plan, with trip interruption kicked up to 150% and most other coverages at higher benefit levels as well. Medical coverage is much higher, at $100,000 for medical expenses and $500,000 for evacuation. The option to cancel for any reason can be added to Roundtrip Choice, along with other optional benefits.

Roundtrip Elite is the highest level of travel coverage, providing the most comprehensive trip insurance. All the coverage maximums are higher with this plan, including $250,000 for the medical benefit and $1,000,000 for emergency evacuation. All the optional coverage benefits offered by Seven Corners can be added to this plan, including the option to cancel for any reason.

The final plan, Roundtrip International, is designed for non-United States residents traveling outside their home country. This plan covers up to $30,000 for trip cancellation and 100% for an interruption. It has $100,000 for medical emergencies and the same for evacuation, making it an ideal choice for the international traveler.

Visitor & Immigrant

Seven Corners’ Inbound line of products are all designed for people visiting the United States or as a form of temporary health care coverage while going through the process to become a citizen. All of these specialized health insurance plans cover regular medical needs, including office visits, rather than providing only emergency coverage. They have a variety of coinsurance and copay amounts as well as benefit maximums and deductibles, making this more like a traditional health insurance plan.

Inbound Guest and Inbound Choice are similar plans, differing in terms of the length of coverage and a few of the benefit maximums. Inbound Choice is not available to those over the age limit of 69.

Inbound Immigrant is for longer-term medical needs and can be renewed for up to 5 years. ideal for a non-United States citizen that will need to be in the country on a more long-term basis.

Seven Corners has a plan designed specifically for those over the age of 65 called Green Cover. It provides major medical coverage up to the age limit of 94.

Student Plans

Available to both residents and non-residents of the United States, Seven Corners insurance for student travelers provides comprehensive medical coverage including regular office visits and emergency care. The plans offer a variety of coverage levels to choose from.

Group Plans

Seven Corners travel insurance comes in two options for groups traveling together to provide medical expense and travel coverage.

Select Liaison Express Group is for travel up to one full year, while Select Roundtrip Elite Group is for shorter-term coverage, with a limit of up to 90 days of coverage.

Are the rates competitive?

We ran a few quick quotes for a 30-year-old traveler, who is an American citizen, that needed seven days of coverage outside the United States.

For medical insurance, with little to no trip protection, the lowest rate was a very affordable $11.80 – this was for the Liaison International plan. The most expensive plan, Majestic, came in only a few dollars more at $14.52.

We compared the trip protection coverage for the same trip and traveler, with a trip cost of $5,000. The lowest-priced plan was, not surprisingly, the Roundtrip Economy plan, at $113. The Elite plan costs the most at $171.

On all counts, Seven Corners plans come in on the lower end and are some of the more affordable options in travel insurance. That said, it is important to look at apples-to-apples coverage, as benefit levels can vary greatly.

Is visitor insurance required in the U.S.?

You don’t need visitor insurance to visit the United States on a B-2 Visa. However, health insurance costs in the US are often higher than those elsewhere, so not having the right coverage could leave you spending thousands of dollars on any needed medical care.

What if the airline canceled my flight because of COVID-19?

If you have purchased  COVID-19 coverage policy from Seven Corners and you need to cancel your policy if your flight has been cancelled, we can request a full refund from the insurance company if you are able to show proof of the cancellation, and it’s before the effective date.

When does  coverage start and end?

Coverage usually begins when you leave the United States for your grant country and ends when you return to the United States at the end of the funding period. You’re typically only covered while you’re in your grant country during your grant period. Stopovers during travel, diversionary travel outside the country of assignment, or stays in the country prior to the start of the grant or after completion of the grant will not be covered by the Department‘s benefits. You will not be eligible for coverage if you take a trip outside your host country.

What is the claims process?

Seven Corners has a long list of available claims forms on their website, which can be conveniently uploaded directly to the claims page.

Once your claims form is completed, it can also be emailed, faxed, or sent via standard mail for processing. There is a number available for claims questions, but this line is only open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. This differs from the 24-hour emergency assistance line that allows you to speak with a member of the travel assistance team.

The claim’s page offers detailed information regarding different types of claims and also provides information regarding appealing a claim.

What do ratings and consumer reviews say about the company?

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) gives Seven Corners an A+ rating. There is a total of 63 complaints against this company in the past three years. Only seven of those have closed in the past 12 months, which is a good sign. The number of reviews is an improvement from the time of our last look at this company.

There are 26 reviews of Seven Corners on Yelp, most of which are one-star reviews. The company does appear to take the time to respond to these reviews, which is generally a good sign. The majority of the reviews cite denial of claims as the reason for the negative review; many also state that the claims process is long and drawn out.

What is the bottom line?

Seven Corners offers plenty of different travel insurance options at reasonable prices. Their customer complaint volume has decreased over time, boosting their reputation and making them a solid choice for travel insurance needs. Their range of plans makes them a solid travel insurance provider for nearly any travel  need, including for visitors and new immigrants to the U.S.

International travelers should compare visitors  international medical insurance and choose the best coverage to have a safe sojourn in the US.
