The N&D Group has a loss ratio of 64.36% Loss ratios show the financial strength of a company. If this number is too low, the company is not paying out enough in claims compared to how much they collect in your car insurance payment. If it’s too high, they’re paying out too much and that usually means a rate increase is coming.
They should typically be between 40-75%, and the N&D Group is right there in that range which is good.

History of The Norfolk & Dedham Group Insurance Company
Norfolk & Dedham (N&D) Mutual Fire Insurance Company was founded in 1825 in Dedham, Massachusetts to provide fire coverage for local residents and businesses as The Norfolk & Dedham Mutual Fire Insurance Company.
The company expanded into neighboring states over the next few decades, and they brought Fitchburg Mutual Insurance Company and Dorchester Mutual Insurance Company reviewed under the N&D banner.
N&D operates mainly in New England, and the mid-Atlantic, offering a range of property & casualty products. They also offer some coverage in Missouri and Arkansas. Although they previously operated in a wider area, the company withdrew from several states due to a lack of profitability. We were unable to find a solid list of states that are served by the company on their website.
Policies are sold through a network of 450 independent insurance agents in the states where N&D operates.
What types of insurance does The N&D Group offer?
An agent can go to their N&D agent login and access multiple insurance policy types. The Norfolk Group writes car insurance and home insurance as well as a few other personal policies, and also offers business insurance both in packages and a la carte.
N&D Group offers a basic personal auto insurance policy with several options for adding on and enhancing coverage. Policies can include all of the legally required liability as well as comprehensive coverage, collision coverage, and other common options.
Regardless of where you live, most states are going to require that you keep at least a mandated minimum set of liability requirements. The Insurance Information Institute (III) lists them here, but you may want more than just the minimum as liability doesn’t cover your own damages. The state minimum car insurance won’t protect your own vehicle.
The N&D Group also offers add-ons for your car insurance. Their PersonalPak endorsement is a package add-on that provides a list of additional coverage options in one. This endorsement adds:
- Accidental discharge of airbags
- Excellent driver deductible credit
- Pet injury protection
- Auto loan/lease gap coverage
- New car protection
N&D also has an accident forgiveness endorsement available and offers a list of common auto insurance discounts such as advance purchase, good student, driver training, and the less common hybrid car discount.
All of the auto insurance information on the site appears to be focused on Massachusetts; while it does not state so directly, we got the impression that is the only state in which they offer this coverage.
What about commercial auto insurance?
N&D offers a range of commercial insurance product options for businesses. Commercial auto policies are available for both private passenger vehicles as well as light to medium-duty trucks, with a maximum cap of 20,000 lbs. gross vehicle weight.
Two package policies are available for various types of businesses. The ComPak Business Owner’s package combines many of the common coverage options in one, while the commercial package is a bit more flexible and allows more customization.
N&D also writes employment practices liability and worker’s compensation business insurance.

Does the N&D Group offer a homeowners insurance policy and renters insurance?
N&D writes both standard homeowners and dwelling fire policies for different types of homes.
Like the auto policy, they offer a base coverage and a list of options that can be added on to customize the policy. Endorsements include the Home Systems package, identity theft, and home computer coverage.
There is a PersonalPak package endorsement for home insurance as well, but we did not find any information on what is included in that package on the company website.
Home insurance policies are available for single-family homes and condos, as well as a renter’s insurance option as well. The dwelling fire program is designed to provide coverage for rental homes, but the site gives little information on this product.
What other personal insurance options are offered?
N&D also writes personal umbrella insurance, which can increase your liability coverage above and beyond your auto and home limits by up to $5 million.
Inland Marine coverage is available to provide coverage for specific high-value items that are not properly protected under your homeowner’s policy alone. This includes items like art, jewelry, and musical instruments. Online quoting is not an option from N&D. This is common practice for a regional insurance company that relies on an independent agent system.
Does The Norfolk and Dedham Group offer online claims?
Online claim filing for policyholders is not offered by N&D. The company does offer a 24/7 toll-free claims line at 1-800-688-1825, or a claim can be reported directly to the agent of record on the policy.
N&D does have a fleet of claims vehicles that can be dispatched to do on-site appraisals, as well as drive-in claims centers located across Massachusetts for auto claims. Auto repairs can be handled through the company’s preferred repair shops, or the policyholder can choose their own shop. The website does not offer much claims information, and there is no detail on the claims process available.

What’s the bottom line?
Without rate information, it’s difficult to compare N&D to other companies. Normally, however, we expect to see higher rates from small, agent-driven insurers. Most drivers will likely get a better rate elsewhere, but if you prefer to work with an insurance agency and a smaller company with peace of mind, N&D might be worth adding to your list.
Make sure you have the right car insurance company for your particular needs. A great way to ensure you’ve found the best insurance rates for your budget is to compare insurance carriers. A vehicle is definitely personal property worth protecting.
