What is collision insurance?

Collision is just like it sounds. It pays for repairing or replacing your car from a collision that you cause.

What does collision insurance cover? Here are some of the damages that would be covered under your collision coverage:

  • Damages to your car if you hit another vehicle or object such as a fence, tree, mailbox, or guardrail
  • A single-car rollover accident
  • Road damage, such as hitting a pothole

Collision insurance won’t cover:

  • Damage to another vehicle or object that you hit
  • Bodily injury damages to you, your passengers, or others
  • Damages to your car from something other than a collision, like theft, vandalism, or acts of nature

Your liability coverage will pay for any property damage and bodily injuries if you cause an accident, and comprehensive coverage pays for damages that aren’t from a collision.

For example, if you swerve to miss a deer and hit a tree, your collision coverage pays for the cost of damage. However, if a tree limb falls on your car, comprehensive coverage would pay for damages.

When it comes to collision vs. comprehensive coverage, you need to have both for your vehicle to be fully covered. The cost of insurance can be high if you opt not to go with your state-mandated minimum coverage, but in the event that your car obtains physical damage from a wreck, the type of coverage you carry will need to be sufficient.

Do you need collision insurance coverage?

Most states require drivers at least a minimum amount of liability coverage but don’t require drivers to carry collision insurance. However, if you are financing a car, the lender can require you to carry collision and comprehensive coverages.

So, why should you buy collision coverage? The answer really has to do with the value of your car.

For example, if your car is only worth a few thousand dollars and you could afford to replace it yourself, you probably don’t need to buy collision car insurance as a coverage option.

However, if your car is newer, the cost to repair it or replace it can be very expensive. Paying about $13 a month for collision insurance makes sense.

Determine how much your car is worth to figure out if you can afford to repair or replace it out of pocket. You can use a site like Kelley Blue Book to learn what your vehicle is worth.

If you choose to carry collision auto insurance, make sure to set your limits and deductible. You want your limit high enough that damages to your car will be covered, and you want your deductible as high as you are comfortable with to keep your rates low.

Most car insurance companies offer collision insurance, so it’s easy to find. Each company will charge a different rate, though, so shop around to find the best deal on your collision insurance rates.
