About Azimuth Risk Solutions

We found very little information on the history of Azimuth Solutions. According to the company website they have been in business for more than 30 years, but the company’s Better Business Bureau (BBB) page shows an incorporation date in 2008.

The company website has a dated feel, although it is relatively simple to navigate. Products are listed right on the front page, while the products page contains only links to brochures in PDF form. The site does not state what type of insurance they sell, but the products listed are all travel medical.

Azimuth is located in Indianapolis, IN, and appears to sell its policies directly. Products are underwritten by Lloyd’s of London, one of the best-known specialty insurers in the world with a long and stable history that goes back hundreds of years.

Azimuth Products

Azimuth writes three types of travel medical insurance; short-term travel, extended major medical, and simplified issue.

Beacon is a basic travel medical insurance policy with coverage for trips ranging from 5 to 365 days in duration. Buying Azimuth Risk Solutions Beacon health insurance is an excellent stopgap for traveling near or far.

The medical maximum ranges from $60,000 up to $2,000,0000 for those up to age 69. From ages 70-79 the maximum is $50,000, and for those 80 and over the maximum is a $12,000. Deductibles can be selected from $0 up to $2,500.

Medical evacuation coverage is provided up to the policy maximum, with a limit of $25,000 if the occurrence falls under the policy’s sudden onset of pre-existing condition benefit. There is an additional $50,000 in coverage for repatriation of mortal remains. Coverage of up to $20,000 is included for political evacuation.

This plan offers plenty of added benefits including emergency dental coverage, and also has some limited trip interruption coverage. It allows for quick trips home of up to 14 days during which coverage will be available within the home country (when the policy covers you for at least 90 days of travel).

Beacon offers the option to add on an extreme sports rider, which is excluded from most travel medical insurance plans.

Meridian Essential and Enhanced

The Meridian plans are designed for people living and working abroad for an extended period of time, as well as for those living in the United States but not eligible for standard major medical insurance.

These plans cover everything a major medical plan does, including regular primary care office visits, specialists, hospitalization, testing, treatment, and even prescriptions. There are two levels – Essential and Enhanced.

Both Essential and Enhanced have a maximum coverage limit of $5,000,000. Deductible amounts range from $250 all the way up to $10,000, and they are doubled for families.

The Essential plan pays 80% of expenses for the first $5,000 after the deductible is met, and 100% after that. Enhanced kicks the coinsurance up to 90%. On both plans, coinsurance is waived with providers that are within the PPO network. These coinsurance amounts only apply within the U.S. or in Canada – coverage is 100% elsewhere in the world.

The Enhanced plan offers additional coverage that isn’t included with Essential. These include maternity care, vision coverage, and tissue/organ transplant. Both plans have the option to add on an extreme sports rider as well as dental coverage.

Meridian Clear

The Clear plan is travel medical for those who have had difficulty getting coverage elsewhere due to health concerns or immediate need. This simplified issue plan can cover international travel or provide coverage in the U.S. for those who are unable to obtain regular major medical.

The maximum limit with this plan is $2,000,000. Deductible options range from $500 up to $10,000.

Like the Essential plan, coinsurance is at 80% for the first $5,000 after the deductible and 100% thereafter for claims in the U.S. and Canada. In-network claims and international claims are all paid at 100%.

Pre-existing conditions are covered after 24 months of continuous coverage. Maternity and newborn care, tissue/organ transplant, and hospitalization are all covered, along with regular routine care.

We ran a quote for a 30-year-old traveler outside the U.S. and Canada for a one-week trip. The Beacon plan returned a range of rates.

For the $60,000 low-end coverage, the rate was $10.13. The high-end coverage of $2 million came back at $24.53. All of these rates were with a $0 deductible.

At the $2,500 deductible, the $60,000 policy dropped to $5.67 and the $2 million policy dropped to $13.73.

In addition to running online quotes, the website offers a rate chart that allows quick comparison of coverage options based on age and coverage needs. These charts are available for all of the plans offered by Azimuth. Rates vary widely depending on age and deductible of choice.

We found the rates offered for the Beacon travel medical coverage to be very reasonable, even coming out quite low with no deductible.

There is not a page on the website dedicated to claims, but we did find the Azimuth Risk Solutions claim forms available for download. Some claims are handled on a reimbursement basis; it is not entirely clear how that is handled. The form lists that claims may be submitted by email, mail, or fax. The Azimuth Risk Solutions claims address is below.

5218 S East St
Indianapolis, IN 46227

There is a toll-free number on the website; although it does not state that it’s for claims it seems likely customers can be directed to the right place. Since Lloyd’s of London is the underwriter for Azimuth, they back claims financially, but Azimuth handles administration and processing.

Ratings and Consumer Reviews

Azimuth has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), with no complaints on file at all in the past three years. They have been accredited since 2010, and the single review on the BBB site is positive.

Conversely, the one review on Yelp is a negative one, citing refusal to pay out on claims.

This is not a lot to go on in terms of reviews. Normally, a lack of reviews is a good thing since people are more likely to write a review when they are unhappy than when they have had a good experience. Few reviews do make it more difficult to get a feel for a company, however, and that’s the case here.

The Bottom Line

Azimuth has some good policies with a lot of coverage and excellent rates, but there is such limited information on the company’s reputation that it is hard to make a solid recommendation. The backing of Lloyd’s of London does provide peace of mind in terms of financial stability, and we were unable to find any red flags on this company, so they may be worth a closer look when shopping for temporary medical coverage.
