Midwest Family Mutual Insurance

Financial Strength

Minnesota-based Midwest Family Mutual Insurance Company has been in business for more than 125 years. They offer a range of both personal and commercial insurance products in 20 states.

What is Midwest Family Mutual?

Like many venerable insurance companies, Midwest traces its roots to a mutual insurer dedicated to protecting farmers. Minnesota Farmers Mutual Insurance was founded in 1891 and provided crop and hail insurance to the state’s farms. The company expanded its personal product lines over the decades, and eventually changed the company’s name to Midwest Family Mutual in 1983.

In 1991 Midwest Family added commercial insurance and also began expansion beyond Minnesota and into neighboring states. Today they cover 20 states across the country and well beyond the Midwest. They write home insurance, auto insurance, and several specialty policies for individuals and a range of commercial insurance products including business owners packages and commercial auto.

Midwest has offices in multiple locations, including a headquarters in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Products are sold by independent agents in all of the states they cover. The company’s somewhat dated looking website seems to indicate that they rely mainly on agent sales and word of mouth to sell their products.

What types of insurance products does Midwest Family Mutual offer?

The company’s products vary somewhat by state, with a wide variety of both personal and commercial options.

Personal Insurance

There is not much in the way of detail on the Midwest Family website regarding their personal products. These products are available in Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, North and South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

They write:

  • Homeowners
  • Personal Auto
  • Boat owners
  • Personal Inland Marine (scheduled personal property)
  • Personal Umbrella

They also offer the option to create a portfolio – a package of personal insurance policies.

Homeowners offers replacement cost coverage and the option to add the Advantage package endorsement. This endorsement brings together several common add-ons in one, including water back-up, refrigerated goods, fire department charges, reward coverage, and more.

There is also a policy called Home-Elite which appears to be a higher-end package. This plan includes a single limit for structures, personal property, and living expenses, disability waiver of premium, $500 in reward coverage, and included liability for boats up to 100 HP.

There is a brief description of the auto insurance policy, which appears to include the basics as well as towing and rental car coverage.

The list of personal discounts includes the most common options, along with a “portfolio discount” which appears to be their version of an auto/home bundle discount.

Commercial Insurance

Commercial Insurance products are offered in a wider area than personal insurance; they are available in all 20 states where Midwest is licensed.

The Business Owner’s Package Policy is offered to most retail and service industry businesses. This policy brings together the most common types of commercial insurance in one. This includes business property and general liability, along with several optional add-on endorsements.

Two package endorsements are available, the Advantage and the Advantage Plus. Each of these packages adds on additional coverage and increases limits on existing coverage.

Midwest Family Mutual also writes other types of commercial insurance, including:

  • Commercial Auto
  • Garage Keepers/Dealers Package insurance
  • Artisans/Contractors Insurance
  • Motor Carrier Insurance (Trucking)

Each of these package policies comes with common base coverage as well as the option to add on several endorsements as needed to customize the policy.

Does the company offer competitive rates?

Midwest Family Mutual does not offer an online quoting option. The company relies on independent agents to bring in new business, and as a result, quotes are only available through those agents. This is a pretty standard practice for insurance carriers of this type.

It is always difficult to guess at how rates will stack up for a company that does not offer any quotes, but in general, agent-driven regional companies are priced a little higher than the big names, especially the direct-buy companies. These companies rely on a good reputation and high quality, personal service to balance out their somewhat higher premiums.

How are claims handled?

Midwest recommends calling your agent directly in order to report a claim but does also offer a 24/7 toll-free claims line as a second option. This number is referred to as an emergency number and is in place to be used when an agent is not available or in a serious accident where immediate assistance is needed. There is no way to report a claim online that we were able to see.

The site promises that a claims representative will be in contact within 24 hours of the initial filing and that most claims are paid out within 10 days. There is no mention of a preferred repair network for auto claims.

The site also states that the company’s claims satisfaction surveys return a 98% rate of high satisfaction. We will take a closer look at their reputation in the next section.

Are the ratings and consumer reviews positive?

Midwest is not Better Business Bureau (BBB) accredited but does have an A+ rating with only one complaint on file in the past three years. That single complaint was closed in the past year.

There are six Google reviews for an overall 3-star rating. The reviews are balanced between negative and positive, with most comments being fairly general. Only one of the negative reviews goes into detail about a poor claims experience.

There are 20 reviews on the consumer insurance company rating site Clearsurance, with an overall rating of 4.44 stars and a lot of very positive comments, leading to an impression of an overall satisfied customer experience.

The impression of this company created by the reviews is a positive one overall.

What’s the bottom line?

Midwest Family Mutual Insurance is likely a good choice for those that prefer to purchase their insurance through an independent agent. We are unable to comment on their rates since we do not have the necessary information, but they do appear to have a good reputation among their customers, with few complaints and a lot of positive reviews.
