Rider Insurance

Financial Strength

As the name implies, Rider Insurance caters to riders of motorcycles, ATVs, and other similar vehicles. Based in New Jersey, they offer valuable coverage in a handful of states and expect further expansion in the future.

About Rider Insurance

Rider Insurance was founded in New Jersey in 1971 by a motorcycle enthusiast with the goal of providing insurance specifically designed for the needs of motorcycle riders. They have since expanded to cover eight states, including Delaware, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Virginia.

They also offer coverage for scooters, mopeds, ATVs, and other off-road vehicles. Insurance products are sold by agents in the eight states where Rider is licensed. The company plans further expansion in the near future.

As a motorcycle-focused company, Rider is involved in the biker community and also works with many charities, partnering with other motorcycle enthusiast groups across the nation. These include annual motorcycle charity rides.

What are Rider’s insurance products?

Rider’s flagship insurance product is of course its motorcycle insurance package policy. This policy is available to a much wider range of bikes than those types of motorcycles covered by the average auto insurance company. This list includes:

  • Cruisers
  • Sport bikes
  • Motocross
  • Touring
  • Trikes
  • Custom
  • ATV/Off-road
  • Mopeds
  • Scooters
  • Reconstructed bikes

Package policies include all of the basics of liability and damage protection as well as the Rider Accessory Package, which covers accessories and add-ons. This package is generally not offered on sport bikes.

Included with comprehensive and collision package policies are trailer coverage, helmet and safety equipment coverage, and even basic trip interruption coverage options.

All of the different vehicles they insure appear to fall under their motorcycle insurance umbrella, including the off-road vehicles such as ATVs and trail bikes they insure. This differs from some other insurance carriers that treat these vehicles as a specialty.

There are a wide variety of non-vehicle transportation alternatives. To learn about some top picks from real users, check out this useful article by Your Parking Space.

How to Find Rates

Rider Insurance does offer online quoting. We ran a quote for a 30-year-old rider in Rider’s headquarters zip code. We selected a 2018 Harley-Davidson FLHR Road King as our sample bike. The site requires that you enter a great deal of personal information, including full name, address, email address, and a phone number which may result in solicitation.

The returned rates were either base level liability at the legal minimum for $180.03 a year, or a full coverage policy with 100/300 bodily injury limits and $500 comprehensive and collision deductibles at $645.81 a year. The site also allows for customization of the quote.

Rider does promise low-cost insurance and a variety of insurance discounts are available. Bear in mind that buying insurance from a one-product company means you might miss out on multi-policy discounts a larger insurance company might provide. Any insurance discount should be factored into any rate comparison.

How to File Claims

Claims can be filed over the phone 24 hours a day, or they can be filed using Rider’s online claims filing system.

Claims forms can also be downloaded from a state-specific list of options, although it is not indicated how they should be sent in.

Rider does not appear to have a preferred network of repair facilities, for claims.  It seems the insured can select any licensed repair facility.

What are the ratings and consumer reviews?

Rider Insurance has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), with only two complaints on file in the past three years.

The company’s Facebook page has a total of 464 reviews. Of those, 259 are five-star reviews. The rest are fairly evenly split among the other star levels, with 43 one-star reviews. Reviews tout good rates, with some complaints about difficulty with claims and customer service. Overall, they seem to have a good reputation in the motorcycle community.

What’s the bottom line?

For bikers who want a motorcycle-centric company that is dedicated to their community, Rider might be a good choice. There is not a lot of detail online regarding their plans, but they appear to offer good package policies and have a solid reputation.
