Workmen's Auto Insurance Company

Financial Strength

Workmen’s Auto Insurance Company is a non-standard auto insurer based in Southern California. They operate as a subsidiary of Mercury Insurance Group, providing basic insurance services with auto insurance policies to high-risk drivers.

What is Workmen’s Auto Insurance Company?

Workmen’s Auto Insurance Company was founded in 1949 and is based in Los Angeles, California. The company previously offered a long list of products including renter’s insurance, but now operates solely in the non-standard auto insurance market. They write policies for drivers unable to obtain coverage elsewhere, usually with very basic auto insurance coverage.

In 2015, Workmen’s Auto was acquired by Mercury Insurance Group, a major auto insurance provider in California. They now operate as a wholly-owned subsidiary.

All of their auto policies, including SR-22 coverage, are sold through an independent insurance agent network. Currently, their products are only available to drivers in California.

What types of auto policies are available?

Workmen’s Auto Insurance focuses on the non-standard market, meaning they help drivers who have a poor driving record, bad credit, international driver’s license, or other issues that cause standard insurance companies to turn them down for coverage.

The company offers two levels of automobile liability insurance coverage including the state legal minimum of 15/30 and a higher liability option at 25/50. Full coverage is also available, although the company website does not offer much in the way of details on optional coverage.

There are multiple payment plans available as well as a low down payment plan, providing options to suit every budget, and the company does offer several discounts including multi-policy discounts, to help customers reduce the cost of their coverage.

Workmen’s accepts drivers with multiple tickets, multiple accidents, DUI, bad claims history, and SR-22 filings, according to the website. Further information on the policy and coverage limits can be obtained by contacting a local agent.

Does the company offer competitive rates?

Online quotes are not offered on the company’s website. There is a “Get a Quote” button, however, it simply directs the visitor to find a local agent in order to obtain quote information.

Workmen’s rates are not expected to compete with standard insurance companies due to the market they serve; they should only be compared to other non-standard companies when shopping for insurance rates.

Can claims be filed online?

Workmen’s has a basic online claim form that will get the filing process started, or there is a 24/7 toll-free line also available.

The company uses a direct repair network, as do many other companies in the automobile insurance industry, and the website offers a search feature for auto owners to locate a shop. As always, the vehicle owners can select any shop of their choosing for repairs, but they may not see the same guarantees and benefits that they have current expectations for when it comes to auto repair costs.

The best way to ensure a smooth claims process after a traffic accident, from the claim investigation, to the claim settlement, and reap all of the other benefits of your policy is to go with one of the repair shops recommended by the company.

Are the ratings and consumer reviews positive?

Workmen’s Auto Insurance is not Better Business Bureau (BBB) accredited and does not have a rating at the time of this review. This may be due to an overhaul of the BBB website in progress when we researched this company, or to a lack of information. There were two complaints on file in the past three years and none in the past 12 months.

There are 28 Google reviews for an overall 1.6-star rating. These customer reviews cite poor customer service, slow response time, and denial of claims. The few positive reviews don’t quite tip the scales in favor of an overall high level of customer satisfaction.

On the company’s Facebook page, 25 reviews have resulted in an overall 2.5-star rating there. The company does seem to take the time to respond to most of the complaints, and the reviews here are much more mixed with some positive comments to add some balance.

What’s the bottom line?

Non-standard insurance programs can be tricky; these auto insurance policies are expensive and programs are often offered by less than reputable companies. We were unable to obtain enough detail on Workmen’s Auto Insurance to make a solid recommendation; there are complaints but not in a large volume, and they are backed by a very big company which gives them a good financial footing.

It may be worth getting a quote from Workmen’s Auto Insurance if you are looking for non-standard auto insurance, whether you’ve had multiple accidents or are considered high risk, in California.

You should also remember that this isn’t going to be the cheapest car insurance out there; vehicle owners who don’t have a poor record may be better off with another company instead of this type of insurance carrier.
