The Highlights

  • Publix partners with Instacart to offer grocery delivery to customers
  • There are two types of Instacart shoppers: full-service shoppers and in-store shoppers
  • Instacart full-service shoppers are the only shoppers that drive and as a result, are required to have access to a vehicle, a valid driver’s license, be at least 18, and pass a background check

Are you wondering how Publix handles food delivery auto insurance?

Publix is a well known grocery store that provides delivery options to any customer that needs it, with minimal additional expense. For this reason, Publix has made the investment into a third-party company, Instacart. Drivers will need slightly more than standard, personal insurance should they be a food delivery driver. A commercial policy is sometimes the best route, but we’ll cover more of that below.

What kind of car insurance do you need as a Publix food delivery driver?

Publix doesn’t maintain a staff of delivery drivers. Rather, they offer food delivery through Instacart.

As an Instacart shopper and delivery driver, the car insurance requirements you’ll need to meet include:

  • Be at least 18
  • Have a valid driver’s license
  • Have access to a regular vehicle
  • Have a compatible smartphone
  • Be able to pass a background check

Instacart doesn’t provide car insurance or food delivery insurance to its delivery drivers. It’s your responsibility to make sure you have the coverage you need both to drive legally and make sure you’re protected while out on delivery. Any damages done to your vehicle while you’re using it for business purposes generally will not be covered under your personal insurance. However, you should always check what your limits are with your insurance company first.

By comparing car insurance, you can easily find the correct commercial auto insurance that you would need to stay safe. If your current insurer doesn’t have any options that would keep you safe behind the wheel at work, you can look at insurance for delivery drivers elsewhere.

Meeting good delivery insurance requirements is extremely important because delivery drivers have one of the highest vehicle fatality rates by occupation, according to Crosley Law.

Where can you get delivery driver car insurance?

You’ll need your personal policy with coverage limits that at least meet the minimum requirements set in your state. However, that most likely won’t cover you when you’re driving your vehicle for work.

For that, you’ll need commercial auto insurance (or business coverage) on top of your personal policy.

Most insurance companies sell commercial policies. For example, you can purchase a GEICO commercial auto policy, commercial policies from Farmers and State Farm, and others.

Rather than a full commercial policy, which can get expensive, with an average of an extra $150 per month on your existing rates, you may be able to purchase a delivery add-on to your personal policy.

This isn’t available from all insurers, but some companies that do offer it include:

  • Crump Property & Casualty
  • International Property & Casualty
  • Progressive
  • State Farm
  • Sunderland Insurance

Another way to save is to compare rates from at least three companies to make sure you’re getting affordable coverage that meets your needs. That way you can focus on the company as well as the price.

Publix Food Delivery Car Insurance: The Bottom Line

Publix works with Instacart to offer food delivery to its customers. Instacart has a few requirements for its full-service shoppers, those that both shop and deliver groceries, including a valid driver’s license.

You’ll need car insurance that meets legal requirements in your state, as well as a commercial auto insurance policy or food delivery add-on policy to protect you while you’re using your vehicle for business as a delivery driver. Most personal auto insurance policies won’t be enough to keep you secure while you’re on the job.

Take a look into what policy limits you currently have, and then compare them against other types of insurance. Doing this will ensure that you won’t be stuck with any medical expenses or repair costs coming out of your pocket should anything happen while you’re making deliveries.
